Confirmed on the medal roll for the 1st Battalion, not entitled to any clasps and did not qualify for the King’s South Africa Medal. 18-year-old Ernest George Harland a painter from Brighton Attested for the 1st Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment on 23rd October 1901 having previously served in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion of the Regiment. His first overseas posting was guarding Boer prisoners on St Helena, he then transferred to South Africa where he served for 64 days before being sent to India for just over 7 years. Transferred to the Army Reserve on 19th November 1909 he was discharged on 22nd October 1913. He also appears to have served during the Great War and was awarded the British War and Victory Medals having served with the Sussex Regiment and Labour Corps.
