James Lambert was born on 28 December 1873 at Bedminster, Somerset and joined the Royal Navy on 19 February 1894 as a Stoker 2nd Class. Serving afloat for the first time with Arrogant from 27 January 1895, he was promoted to Leading Stoker 2nd Class on 8 October 1899.
