And most probably was David - given the comparatively small number of men that worked for the Post Office in Victorian times. I wonder if he was not one of the 2 mentioned as being future Post Master General's in the Union? If so, whoever bought the QSA has a bonus on his hands if he researches properly and my suspicion is correct.

Not sure if you have researched your man or not Mike - just in case - here is his death certificate - James Carlisle - Retired GPO.

Almost certainly. The 1910 Cape of Good Hope Civil Service List reveals that Donald Mackintosh was a telegraphist at Fort Beaufort from 10 June 1881 to 30 November 1891. At the time of the ABW, he was the surveyor and district engineer in charge of the Midland district, based in Port Elizabeth, a position he still held in 1910.

Not one of the first two postmasters-general of the Union, though. They were Hoal, followed by Wilson. Hoal was the last PMG of the Cape Colony prior to Union.

Thank you, Arthur.

I was looking yesterday for Postmaster Generals and was coming across the odd name but not a Mackintosh.

Donald has two roll entries. The second (WO100/270p152) which is crossed through states:

Accompanied Colonel Jarstin's Column, serving as telegraphist. Serving portion of March (?). Repaired lines at various points, once under protection of armoured train.

Dr David Biggins
