Robert Thompson attested for the Black Watch at Arbroath on 14th May 1894. He served in South Africa with the 1st Battalion and is confirmed on the medal roll for the medal with these 4 clasps. The Battalion returned to the UK in October 1902 and were than stationed at Edinburgh Castle. On 13th May 1903 the Battalion was on parade at Dalkeith Palace where that were presented with their medals for the South African War by King Edward VII, Piper Thompson was amongst those present. In August 1904 the Regimental Band and 7 Pipers, including Thompson sailed to Canada for a 2-week engagement at Toronto followed by a 50-city concert tour, they returned to the UK in October the same year. 5520 Lance Corporal Robert Thompson died at Fort George on 30th October 1905.
