Greetings from Bermuda .
I have a rare QSA named to Abraham christoffel kockemoer , pow no.7386. His ORCVOLS number was
267.
He was detained on his farm near Bethlehem on 17th June 1900 along with his brother , pow no 7386.
This medal is the only QSA I know of awarded to the ORCVOLS. How could a pow earn a QSA
If the war ended in May 1902 .
The ORCVOLS medal list shows he was from Bethlehem..
Thank you,
Andrew Bermingham

There were cases where a captured Boer signed the oath and joined a British unit. For example some of The National Scouts. I think the British tried to recruit them as they were capable and had local knowledge.

Thanks for the quick response. Kockemoer and brother sent to Bermuda. First batch of POWs returned home in June 1902 so he must joined on return after six week voyage . Medal roll states
he served for 4 months. So it appears QSA s were awarded for service after peace was declared .
I have a collection of NS QSAs , including a couple of defaced ones but the ORC medal seems to be the rarest of them all.
Thank you again,
Andrew

Hi Andrew......

I have looked at the ORCV medal roll and there were over 120 medals issued to the unit by my quick count..... I have seen one or two come up for sale...... I wonder if there have been any listed in City Coins Auctions......
