Thanks Mike- a bit more on my man he is noted as attending both the Royal Hiberninan Military School and the Duke of York's Military School both apparently for sons of soldiers-all was revealed when I tracked him down on the 1891 Census age 17 his father was a Color Sergeant with one of the Yorkshire Militia Battalions.

I have to retract a previous statement I made about Pte Joseph Wilson attending a couple of Military Schools- I have since found that the names of these schools appear on all soldiers papers of the period -in fact they are printed on the document which alerted me to look at other papers I have. No annotations in the remarks column so another red herring and ther goes another potential avenue of research.
