Thank you all for your prompt and positive responses. I fibbed yesterday when I wrote that I would be putting Houldin aside to return to another project. As it transpired I temporarily abandoned Sergeant Patrick Quirk, 45th Regiment, instead.

You were put on my list of contacts when I read about Houldin's Cape Police service. You have forestalled me, and I am most grateful for the copies off his papers.

When I checked his entries on the SA Archives website I realised that the CP entry in Woolmore's book was incorrect, and Houldin joined the CP after the ABW.

Regards
Brett

PS The Houldin clan left only a faint impression on the official records of South Africa, so information about George will be only indirect through the records of units in which he served.

Like Adrian, I had already put your name on a list of people to contact, and I am most grateful that you also anticipated me.

The record in Drooglever's book about Houldin's service in the TMI being interrupted by a spell with the police is interesting. I have the medals of a Sergeant in the ILH who was detached to serve in a town police in the western Transvaal in pre-S A Constabulary days. Perhaps Houldin had a similar deployment. Does Drooglever record anything on or before 13/8/1900 that might explain Houldin's posting ?

Always happy to assist. Droogleever just says "Trans. to police: 13/8/00 - 17/11/00". His short time with TMI after that (about four months) perhaps indicates a transfer to fill a vacancy or something like your Sgt. in the ILH. I had a look on the TMI roll to see if there was anything extra there. There was not. I take it that the KSA was issued off the SH roll?
Best regards
IL.

Thank you for checking, IL.

Both QSA and KSA were issued off the SH rolls. I meant to mention earlier that the QSA has the name as Houlden with an 'e', but the KSA has 'i'.
