Born Rochdale. DCM LG 11/1/1916 attd 1st Lowland Fld Amb attd 1/6th Bn Scottish Rifles "for conspicuous gallantry, for more than 12 hrs he exhibited great bravery & devotion in assisting the medical officer to attend to wounded, under very heavy shell fire, enabling over 200 cases to be taken from the trenches".

Alfred John Naylor. Born 1882 in Windle, St Helens, Lancashire, England. Service papers extant.

Described as: A Queen's South Africa Medal with two claps to' 5133 Pte J Wootton Liverpool Regt', together with a renamed King's South Africa Medal to the same recipient with two clasps,



The image shows it is the QSA that is renamed.

British War and Victory Medals, with MID (Bt. Col. P. Schletter.)

CB London Gazette 26 June 1902: ‘In recognition of of services during the operations in South Africa’.

Percy Schletter was born in Edgbaston, Birmingham, on 4 August 1855, the son of Carl Schletter, a wealthy ship owner and businessman. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 8th Foot on 13 June 1874, and served with that regiment for his entire career. Initially posted to the 2nd Battalion, he served in India, Afghanistan (12 April 1879 to 20 October 1880), and in Bermuda, being promoted Captain in 1882; Major in 1891; and Lieutenant-Colonel in February 1900. Appointed Commanding Officer of the 3rd Battalion in 1901, he took command of the 1st Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War, and for his services was Mentioned in Despatches and appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath.

Schletter subsequently served in Burma, and was promoted Colonel in February 1904. He retired in 1908, but was recalled for service during the Great War, and commanded the 16th Reserve Battalion, King’s Liverpool Regiment from 3 December 1914, until the Battalion was re-assigned on 1 September 1916. He latterly served on the Staff, and for his services was again Mentioned in Despatches.

He died in Bengueal, Angola, on 22 August 1922.

QSA (5) Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill (5099 Pte J. Toole. L'Pool Regt M.I.), officially re-impressed naming, disk polished and suspension somewhat slack

James Toole. Sold together with a most interesting contemporary photograph album, containing 70 original black-and-white photographs of the campaign in South Africa. All images are annotated beneath, and examples include: 'Armoured Train Disaster - Chievely'; 'Boer Defences top of Harts Hill'; 'A Boer Trench on Spion Kop'; and 'Military Balloon Ladismith' [sic].

WO100/172p185 confirms the clasps and notes that he was invalided.
