Frederick George Wilkins was born in Maidstone, Kent circa 1871 and attested with the 5th Royal Irish Lancers at Canterbury on 29 March 1889 at age 19 after working as a carpenter. In July 1894, Wilkins was tried by court marital and awarded 84 days imprisonment. Wilkins was stationed in South Africa from 5 March 1898 until returning to England on 18 March 1902. He was later discharged at Canterbury on 12 July 1902.
