Wine making in the Eastern Cape is now being practiced is it not?

Hey Rory,

Great write-up; I only just read it for the first time.

Excellent medal.

Do you know where I can get a copy of Oscar Hintager and Captain WH Mullern memoirs; I have recently acquired a medal of a man who served with Hartman. It will be great if they were both mentioned in them.

Thanks.

Regards,
Shaun

Hi Shaun

I've just paged through my digital file on Hartman and note, with regret, that I never transferred the hard copy material I had amassed into digital format. I have parted with the medal to a friend in the meanwhile and it's possible that I included the reports you seek in the paperwork I sent with the medal.

What is the name of your chap? I attach hereto a paysheet for the OVS Artillery, perhaps your fellow is mentioned.

Regards

Rory

Hi Rory,

Thanks for that; in your original write-up I liked the way you were able to find a story of the artillery encounter from both sides.

The man I’m researching is Lt Sarel Johannes Liebenberg; Neville identified him here:

www.angloboerwar.com/forum/5-medals-and-...berg-abo-medal#96038

Sarel Johannes Liebenberg was born on 17 February 1874 in Philippolis and died on 24 February 1945 in Vryheid.
He was a member of the Free State police where he attained the rank of lieutenant. In the Second War of Independence he first served under General M. Prinsloo and then under General C. R. de Wet.
After the war he first farmed in the Free State and then in the South-Eastern Transvaal. In 1920 he moved to Vryheid, where he remained until his death.

Sgt Hartman signed Lt Liebenberg Vorm B and also identified as a member of the OVS Mounted Police. It’s interesting that Hartman and Liebenberg both moved to Vryheid.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,
Shaun
