Gilbert North Houston had a serviceman’s funeral paid for by the S.A government. His coffin was draped in the orange white and blue flag and he was buried at Stellawood Cemetery in Durban on 12 February 1968.
Grave no 360 Block AF Portion.
Stellawood Cemetery Interment & Cremation, Umbilo, District Durban, Kwazulu-Natal, RSA.

Note- my family say Gilbert died at the age of one hundred and two.
Cemetery records confirm age at death was 102.
His baptism record however, suggests he was 91 when he died.

Hi Rory,

Gilbert North Houston is my great-great-grandfather. To add to Natasha's information, at the time of his death, Gilbert was being cared for and living with his daughter-in-law (my great grandmother), Clarice Beatrice Houston who was the wife of his son Albert Bennett North Houston. Gilbert was admitted into Addington Hospital in Durban in the last days of his life. The hospital would not allow Clarice to visit him alone as she was a coloured woman, she was only permitted into the hospital if she attended it with Gilbert's daughter Lilly Southgate (Houston) despite the fact he had been living with her. Evidence of apartheid at its finest.

My grandmother knew that both her father Albert and her grandfather Gilbert had fought for South Africa in various wars but believed their medals to have been lost. She will be pleased to know that her grandfather's medal is out there. We are still trying to track down her father's medal.

If you are still looking for a photograph of Gilbert, please message me privately.

Regards,
Krystle
