Francis Poulson was born at Liverpool on 2 October 1876. He entered the Training Ship Indefatigable on 6 October 1890 which he left on 30 September 1893 bound for Buenos Aeries. From 1 November 1897 he served on the training ship Eagle. He enlisted into the Royal Naval Reserve on 15 November 1899, however, in the meantime served with the Cape Garrison Artillery during the Second Boer War reaching the rank of Bombardier. Returning home after the war he is noted as training on Cornwallis & Russell from 3 April 1904. Poulson received his Certificate of Competency as a Second Mate 5 December 1912. With the outbreak of the Great War on 5 September 1914, he is sent to Halifax to join Niobe and on 20 May 1915 joins Vivid having previously served on Diana. He was promoted to Skipper on 1 September 1915 and served on Ulysses II and is promoted to Chief Skipper on 1 July 1917. Poulson received his LS&GC on 16 February 1918 whilst he was serving on Vivid, he was awarded a Silver War Badge (31161) on 26 September 1918 and received his Certificate of Competency as First Mate on 23 November 1918, and was discharged from the service in 1919 but remained in the Merchant Navy and received his Certificate of Competency for Master on 27 May 1920 and Extra Master on 31 July 1920.
