Thank you very much - that's really interesting! I was beginning to work out that he was a career soldier but I didn't realise he'd seen so much. Such a shame that there's probably nobody else left to investigate his history and it is now all so long ago.

I shall put the advert in as suggested - I'd just love to know what happened to his medals. I would presume that his widow sold them at some point, although since she was one of 10 children, there may be other family members that I am as yet unaware of.
