I took a day off work last Friday to attend the DNW sale which included a collection of Tributes hoping to add to my small collection. The realisations were out of this world! Hammer prices- Doncaster £2200, Lewes £3500, Lostwithiel £3400, Melton Mowbray £920, Winsford £2100, Worksop £850, Dublin £1600, Ballater £5200, Campbeltown ££3400, Partick £4100, Huntly £3900 etc etc. I just sat there with my mouth open!
I know some of these are rare but these prices were 5-6 x estimates. The strangest one was described as "Penarth Tribute Medal 1902" which was actually a peace celebration medalet and not a tribute at all in the Hibbard sense. It sold for £1400!!

Some of the photos would be worth adding to the Tribute medal section of the website. I think photos is as close as I am likely to get to these medals now!

Hello Paul.....

I agree the prices were way out of this world so I am going to have to update my own collection.... I had placed a couple of on line bids but was astonished.....

According to my records a Montgomery sold on ebay in 2008 for $102.50..... DNW... L210.00.....

I can also say the same thing about the City Coins auction earlier this month, prices were through the roof.....

A Defence of O'okiep Medal est. 12 to 15,000 Rand went for 22,770.....

Hi Mike,

There was a Defence of O'okiep QSA pair at DNW (lot 708)- £2600 (est. £1400-£1800). I think these prices must be a "bubble", leastways I hope so.

Hello Paul,

Any idea who was buying the Truibute medals - in the room/internet/phone, same person or different individuals?

Paul....

I checked my records and I bought a single O'okiep in 1998, true 13 years ago and it was $375.00 Canadian.....

My Montgomery in 1988 for $30.00 Cdn, and my Melton Mowbray in 1975 for $60.00 US....

Hi Meurig,

There were two very determined phone bidders, but no idea who they were, + one room bidder apart from me who had as little luck as I did. I think the majority were bought by the same phone bidder. It wasn't NC because I asked him.

If you hear more, please let me know. I have just moved my pathetic collection into the safe!
