I can't find any birth date, I seriously think that 38 was a lie on his behalf, he looks a lot older. The newspaper clipping talks of a meeting between Hugh and his brother in SA again we have no info.

Hi Mcaleera

A funny coincidence, but I worked for 25 years on the old premises of Knights Deep Gold Mining Co from 1988 to 2013.
They are situated in the suburgs of Knights and Primrose, Germiston, to the East of Johannesburg, not too far from the airport.
The gold mine itself no longer exists, it closed around 1960.

Regards
Adrian

Mcaleera
Many thanks for posting the family pic and the newspaper cutting. All of that adds greatly to my earlier post re Sgt.Keys. Indeed, it would be interesting to hear of his "most dramatic meeting with his brother" during the South African campaign. On the off-chance, I had a quick look through the roll of Brabant's Horse and did find a "772 C.S.M. Keys L.B." who - like Hugh Keys - served at Wepener; however Keys L.B. later served with the Queensland M.I. as a Lieutenant - and may just be a surname coincidence.
Best Regards
IL.

Do you have a Christian name or age for CSM L. B. Keys. I could try a trace on my end. It would also be useful in helping to trace H. Keys birth date as I am convinced that he lied about his age when joining in 1914.
