Rigg's granddaughter sent me this wonderful photo of him with some of his company.

A question - why would he (they) be wearing tartan kilts when they were Royal Lancaster's and not one of the Scottish outfits?

Regards

Rory

At a brief glance I would have said that the photo shows men of a signals section from a highland regiment mid to late war.

That's interesting Frank because Rigg, from the get-go, was always attached to the Royal Lancs. I've not been able to trace any link he had to a Highland regiment. The photo was taken at Victoria West in the Cape although I'm not sure when.

The officer in the centre of things is definitely Reg Rigg.

Morning Rory,
I just say what I see, there is nothing in the photo at all to suggest these men are in the Kings Own Royal Lancaster, but, there are many things that suggest they are not.

I quite see your point Frank and I'm not having a go at you. The photo is decidedly that of Rigg irrespective of whose kilt he is wearing :)

The officers uniform in the photo is rather odd, the rankers all wear the uniform of a highland regiment, you can very clearly see the men in the foreground wear Khaki Drill Service Order, complete with their kilt aprons, their hose ( which is unique) whilst those at the rear appear to be wearing serge.
Looking at kilts I would have said the tartan is not government, so that rules out the Black Watch, as no insignia is visible, so based solely on their hose, which as mentioned, is absolutely unique, I would have to say that these men are all wearing the uniform of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
