Interestingly, a certain Charles Dickens also wrote "Hard Times" set in Manchester too, very fitting in my case!

Private Oakes died of disease at Ladysmith on the 15th of February 1900 he is buried at Intombi Cemetery.
Medal acquired from the Brett Hendey collection, thank you Brett.

I ventured to York today to look at the memorial plaque in York Minster to the 18th Hussars.
Pte.Oakes is listed on the memorial which is a nice brass plaque situated just inside the side doors adjacent to the undercroft.
Unfortunately this is probably one of the darkest parts of the Minister and because the plaque is polished brass, flash was useless, so please excuse the poor efforts.
In the main part of the Minister there are several memorials to South African casualties, I hope they may be of interest.
