Hello Jon

Thanks for this - so not just any "cattle ranger" but De Beers' cattle ranger. I would imagine he was the boss of a number of Africans, so quite a handy multi-lingual chap.

Good to hear from you. Frederick SHAW (4QIB) discharged from CoCR 15011902; this from the Smith booklet. Just now I had a look on the ancestry site (I previously mentioned this when I discovered more info about SAYER) and there was no mention of SHAW there. Does not really mean much; just tried it on the off chance.
Hopefully the SHAW pair found a home here in OZ and it may well turn up in time.

IL.

Hi Ian,

I think it was passed in at the auction and havn't heard anything of it or the other items since. So hopefully it still has a good home here.

G'day all,

I don't see many attestation papers for the Corps of Cattle Rangers and I thought someone may find it interesting to see the T&C's of what they signed up for.

Interesting to see the attestation document all handwritten.
It would appear to be a more lucrative proposition than Tommy Atkins or a colonial volunteer could expect to earn for his service. And I imagine that there was an element of 'entrepreneurship' amongst the ranks of the C of CR!!

As an aside, a QSA named to this corps has long eluded me!

Many thanks for posting this example of an attestation.

Cheers Steve
