I have been given two photos of suposed relatives of mine. Both are said to be the same chap but I have my doubts. Both are said to have been taken in South Africa, but the chap on the horse's photo was taken by a photographer in India!! Any help given will be greatly received!!!

Hello,
The first photo is intriquing, that helmet badge, a grenade perhaps, but which one?
And the bit boss too!

Perhaps my eyes decieve me, maybe a helmet plate centre, its big enough, but again, which one?
The horse's appearance as well, a good turn out, a superb photo!

Conductor....

The first picture I would definitely say is in India..... The badge in the front of the helmet was a no no as it made a good aiming point for the Boers....

Hi all,

I would agree from both the foot of the picture and the badge at the front, that it appears to be India; Conductor, does it just say "India" on the photo as there were a lot of Indians in South Africa.
However if it's a Grenadier's or Fusilier's badge, were they used as mounted Infantry?
It does look like a HP centre?

regards, Iain

Greetings All,

Not sure if this reply gets to ALL those members who have replied to my original request for help. If not I'll copy this to the others.

The photo of the mounted soldier was shown to me by a cousin and I scanned it. It was still in the presentation folder and had the photographers name and address on it. It states it was taken by RAM DAYAL in Cawnpore. I checked on another web site and tghought that Ram Dayal had a studio in South Africa, which is why I assumed he had served in the Boer War. (Obviously I was wrong.) I have tried to enlage the head dress badge but no luck. His name is possabily MURCH, but that is only a guess.
The other picture poses the question as to why the hat he is wearing has the right hand side turned up NOT the left as I've seen in all other photos.
Thnks for help so far.
