Hi,

This photo shows Canadian soldiers. The photo was taken by "Rice" Photographer in Montreal, Canada. This photography studio was active from the1900s to the 1940s.

Can you tell me if these men are Canadian Boer War Soldiers? If so, considering the uniform they worn and the fact that the photography studio was located in Montreal, could you identify the unit to which these two men belonged to? Personally, I think it was one of the following two units: the "Royal Canadian Dragoons" or the "1st Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles".

Thanks.

Yes, Canadian but not sure of the period, the Brass on the collar looks OK even though I cannot see the crown (there were many variations of this collar made as it was also worn by the Militia) and the shoulder brass curves down instead of straight (all I have seen are straight). They also wore the Stetson between the BW and into WW1..... I think that this is between the wars......

Mike

P.S. Just Found an after Boer war picture of an officer with the turned down should brass so I guess that it is correct......

Suggest search forum under Canada and Uniform Badges and Equipment...... I have several posts there......

Thank you Mike for your message and your observations. It's very appreciated.

I will do the research you suggested on the forum.

Do you think these men are soldiers belonging to a cavalry unit? Are they Enlisted men?

Richard

Hi Mike,

Do you think that's the number 5 on that shoulder strap?
