Good thinking, EFV.
I can only find one commando which begins with an A which is the Amsterdam commando.
If AS stands for the farm name, then I draw a blank on Breytenbachs when going through the list of farms like Allmans Spruit, Armoed Spruit, et cetera.
Could it be a corporalship? Like, the famous Korporaaal Abraham Smit from Carolina, who led the early counterattack on Spioenkop? I found a lad named Johaan Hendrick Breytenbach who was interned in the Standerton concentration camp whose record notes "Came from Carolina taken on commando"...
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

Dave George has very helpfully pointed me to a Guedes and Mauser carbine in Part 2 of "Carvings from the Veldt". Again, a name, in this case "F.J. Venter", has been carved in identical style on the stocks of both rifles. This is presumably evidence of another upgrade scenario.
