Below is a photograph of a silver cigarette box that was presented to Major J.H.G. Byng by officers of the South African Light Horse. The S.A.L.H. badge on the front conforms to "type D" in my first post.
Set into the lid is a watercolour of mounted officers of the 10th Hussars (Major Byng's regiment), dated 1878.

Around the sides are engraved the following places and engagements associated with the service of the S.A.L.H. during the ABW:

1899: COLENSO.

1900: SPEARMANS, ACTON HOLMES, SPION KOP, VAAL KRANTZ, HUSSAR HILL, CINGOLO, PIETERS, VAN REENAN'S PASS, LADYSMITH, ELANDSLAAGTE, HELPMAKAAR, BIGGARS BERG, DUNDEE, NEWCASTLE, INGOGO, UTRECHT, VAN WYK, BOTHA'S PASS, GANSVLEI, ALMANS NEK, WAKKERSTROOM, LANDSPRUIT, STANDERTON, AMERSFORT, ERMELO, TWYFELANE, GELUK, BERGENDAL, MACHADADORP, HELVETIA, NOOITGEDACHT, BADFONTEIN, LYDENBERG, DEVIL'S KNUCKLES, SABI VALLEY, MAC MAC, PILGRIMS REST, KRUGER'S POST, PRETORIA, VOLKSRUST, THABA NCHU, PAPFONTEIN, SCHOOMBIE, EENBULT, STEYNSBURG.

1901: BANGOR SIDING, BETHESDA, MURRAYSBURG, WILLOWMORE, KENIS VALLEY, UNION DALE, ABERDEEN, COLESBERG, PHILLIPOLIS, REDDESBURG, EDENBERG, SMITHFIELD, WEPENER, ROUXVILLE, BETHULIE, KNAPSACK RIVER, LUCKOFF, RAMAH, FAURIESMITH, SPRINGFONTEIN, VREDEFORT, REITZBURG, KLERKSDORP, BOTHAVILLE, KROONSTAD, HEILBRON, SLABBERTS WAAG, BLAAUW KRANZ, LINDLEY.

1902: REITZ, VREDE, HARRISMITH.

A typewritten label inside the lid reads: "This cigarette box was owned by the late Field-Marshal Lord Byng of Vimy of Thorpe Hall, Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex. Given to him after the South African War by fellow officers of the South African Light Horse which he formed. The many place names around the box are of campaigns in which the South African Light Horse took part ....."

Thank you Mike,

Interesting to see the different mode of attachment, presumably with thread via the eight corner holes. I assume there are no lugs to the reverse.

This helmet flash of the Volunteer Active Service Company, King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, uses a similar arrangement (attributed to 7308 Private Duncan Austin).

Neville,
I'd love to see more of your helmet, and any other helmets etc that members have.
Could I encourage you to start a thread on "headgear"?
Rob

Thank you all for contributing to this, it has served a great reference.
I would like to submit what I believe may be a sweetheart SALH pin. I’ve never seen one like it and to be honest, this is a little before my area of expertise.
Appears to be made of brass with the motto, but the reverse has “Ethel” inscribed.
Any input is gladly received.

Regards,
K
