David,

Did you see this piece I wrote about Gerrans, the Mafeking coach-builder and souvenir maker? It might be of interest.

Neville,

I did thank you. It contains a lot of very useful information.

I have been trying to confirm which hand suffered the damage and suspect from your portrait that it was his left.

Your image confirms that Gerrans is the man with his leg resting on the right axle with his damaged left hand behind his back.

Model of The Wolf sold through Christies, 15 July 1999, for £3,450 GBP.

Auctioneers' description:

A Model Of 'The Wolf' Howitzer Of Mafeking
Circa 1899
With slightly tapering multi-stage sighted iron barrel, brass trunnion-band and trunnions, the former engraved 'Wolf', brass breech with pierced vent, standing iron back-sight and knob-shaped cascabel-button, the trunnion-band and breech linked by four iron bands: on original field carriage comprising wooden frame mounted on an iron chassis with large iron spoked wheels with brass naves (iron parts with minor pitting throughout); together with a note concerning the provenance of the model written by a member of the Panzera family
7.5/8in. (19.3cm.) barrel

One of five models of "The Wolf", made in the Mafeking railway shops shortly after the siege. This example was presented to Major Panzera, and was later sold by his widow. According to Colin Walker, in 2006 it was in the collection of Melvyn Gallagher ("Mafeking's Artillery", 2006, p. 28).

That looks to be an excellent model and costs a lot more than the original.

In my original bio of Maj. Panzera posted some eight years ago, the manufacture of four miniature models of The Wolf was mentioned as being carried out in the Railway Workshops. I recall that that info came from Colin Walker of "Mafeking Siege Register" renown.
