I'm looking information about this badge.
It's a badge of the South African Constabulary (Baden-Powell's era 1900-1909); I don't sure if it was for uniformity (military use with the uniform or hat) or for civil use.

I have never seen a badge like this before and I have checked the book No Colours No Drums and a couple of privately made badges ate mentioned but nothing on this one......

Looks like he had the proper hat badge on the other side......

Yes I have seen it (The official badge)!
"Be Prepared", can this be an optional hat badge? I have seen photographs of SACs with other hat insignia, in addition to the official one.
A Troop Sergeant Major or Q.M.S badge? I say it for the crown.
Can it be a badge for use without an uniform?

This is a photo of a Canadian who served in SAC and the badge in the front of his hat is the collar badge of the, "Royal Canadian Regiment, 2nd Special Service Battalion"..... He was most likely a member of this unit before joining the SAC when the RCR's went home..... He is wearing the proper and official badge on the side of his hat..... I think that the Be Prepared badge (Which is not an motto of the SAC) is something made up at the time.....

I have also seen photo's of Australians wearing their old badge on one side and the official badge on the other......

No it's not the norm, I would think it was simply made to order by one of the jewellers upon the Rand.
