Gentlemen
See the re-posting concerning captured Boer flags at the RNSWL museum. Given the passage of time, THAT is the condition in which I would expect to see an original Boer flag these days.
Regards
IL.

Sadly, the maker of the Z.A.R. and O.V.S. flags has branched out, and is now fabricating C.I.V. pieces ....

Tell-tale features include the fictitious ink stamps on the headers and the use of thread that remains white despite the discolouration / tea-staining of the fabric panels (possibly due to the use of poly cotton thread). Also, the white fields tend to have very heavy creasing, which often doesn't match that of the adjoining panels.

SOLD FOR £230 GBP.

Beware: more dodgy flags have surfaced at auction recently, with the usual fictitious ink stamps on the headers and the weird creasing. The War Department broad arrow is a give away, as none of the CIV's equipment was issued by the Government. And anyway, these flags were made as souvenirs for the public so they could show their support for the "Lord Mayor's Own", not as regimental colours.

Happy to see that Lockdale's have withdrawn the example they were due to sell at their next sale.

Discovered today that the auction house selling the above flag is a new offshoot of spanmil, the eBay seller that has been listing "original" ZAR and OVS flags for four years now. See the first post in this thread. A worrying development. The internet is littered with posts about the "authenticity" of items sold by spanmil and Spandau Militaria (the shop behind spanmil and UK Militaria Auctions).
