Definitely not Boer War Rosemary. The Union of South Africa came about with the amalgamation of the four "colonies" in 1910 - this flag, with a few minor variations, dates from that era.

The flag in the centre to the left of your photo is the old ZAR (Transvaal) flag. The one in the centre is the old Orange Free State flag and the Union Jack to the right represents the 2 "British" colonies in the Cape Colony and Natal.

I would agree with IL on the rest.

Rory

Rosemary, I agree with IL and Rory.
Several years ago I found one in an antiques shop in Houston about the size of a page of paper mounted with a small wood stick. Like school children might be given to wave at a parade or to welcome an important person.

Thank you everyone! You can see my post was based on complete ignorance! So, just to clarify, what date range would you say the flag could be from? You said post 1978, so not World War II era even? It looks like it has some age to it. The names on it are not New Zealanders and I am guessing by the number of Dutch and German names, maybe South African names? Thanks again and sorry for all the questions.

The flag you have was used between 1928 and 1994, when it was replaced by the flag currently in use.

Thanks for that correction. Re "1928", Butterfingers IL hit the wrong key! Don't know how I find the trigger at times!
Best regards
IL.

IL, I understand the "butterfingers" problem only too well. I now have to peer at the computer screen like a bat in daylight, so my fingers are squashed nearer the keyboard and no longer find the right keys with ease. I find it difficult to say good things about computers, but the easy correction of typing errors was a great invention.
