Hi Thank you for the reply

My Grandfather was John William White born in Barnsley Yorkshire on the 9th August 1875 . His birth certificate states William White but he was abandoned by his father after his mother died in 1879 and was left with an aunt who already had a son William White so from the age of 4 he was known as John William White and in later life Big John . On the 1891 census he had moved to Bradford and was working as a groom . We were told he joined the army under age. So could have been in the Army before the Boer War. Cannot find any records for him but we do remember the photo from when we were younger and that he did go to Boer War, in 1911 he was a Lorry Driver in Leeds and also joined for the 1st world War but was out by 1916 due to Sickness poss Malaria. And was supposed to have been in Egypt Transporting Prisoners before he was sent home. Have been to the National Archives at Kew a few times but no records have survived from his service in the 1st world war.

Hello Lorraine,
Okay, well you have been to Kew so you know what it's all about and need no help from me, I see what you meant regarding a common name.
Regards Frank
