A small point .... "Hawarden" was the Hawarden Castle, a ship used to transport POW's to India. The Anglo-Boer War Museum in Bloemfontein should have a record of the camp the man went to.

Thanks for pointing this out. I did a quick search.

Prisoner Number 16838 HPJ Baasden was transported on the Hawarden Castle to Indie and was held in a POW camp called Ahmadnagar.

I can still not find any record of him returning to South Africa. Any ideas?

Researching Boer POW's seems to be very problematical and I cannot offer you any useful advice. If you look at the posts on 'Bgr Edward Meyers, Heidelberg Commando' you will see the difficulties that I have faced with this man. Since Baasden was also in the Heidelberg Commando, both he and Meyers may have travelled together on the Hawarden Castle to India and ended up in the Ahmednagar Camp. The only reason I know that Meyers was moved to Fort Gobindghar in Amritsar is that he got married in that city and there is a record of his marriage in a local church. Otherwise his record as a POW is blank.

I will be interested if you do manage to find out more about your man.
