Thanks Dave - can find a Reitpoort (Cane Gate) & Bospoort (Bush Gate) near Smithfield but no Stoppoort. Smithfield gets a lot of mentions in the "Histories" but they all seem to be in general terms rather than a specific engagement and in 1900. Stoppoort receives no response on searching this site except your mention of it (and now mine). The loss of two lives does not seem to have registered beyond the mentions I have pointed out, had everybody become that inured to reports of death from South Africa? Surprising as one was a member of the aristocracy.
