Hello Hunter 7 – Dave has done you proud – I have attacked your GGF from another angle via Public Member Family Trees on Ancestry. A 60+ New Yorker named Janet Rothenwander who is the great-great granddaughter of William’s sister (Mary) has a photo of William in uniform and sporting his Boer War Medal ribbons. She has him born on 25 October 1862 based on his 1939 Register entry and died 21 March 1943 in York based on his probate record. Regards, David.

Thank you so much - that’s some great research - I know that my father has been keen to get more information about his grandfather for years now.

Assuming you do not have membership of Ancestry here it is:

Further investigation shows Janet (your 3rd cousin by my reckoning) does not possess the original but was sent a copy by a Laura Sheppard (a Londoner in her twenties) who is, like you, a direct descendant of William. Her father would appear to be your second cousin. I would be happy to message both on Ancestry on your behalf (and send them your email address) or you could join Ancestry and message them directly.

Btw Laura also has a wonderful photo of him later in life walking along a beach.

What a superb photo.
Possible 3rd ribbon is for long service?
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave
