So, in reading that he was not entitled to QSA because he had not served the requisite 18 months prior. But did qualify for the clasp for 1902

You mean KSA?

These dates should help. 1902 clasp only.

Yes sorry that's what I meant

So even though he was on St Helena for a while and in south Africa for a while he was still only entitled to one medal because he had not done the 18 months prior to being in South Africa

Correct.

With reference to him being a naughty boy.
As well as the above mentioned offences. He is also recorded as being given another 28 days in prison for striking a fellow soldier on police duty. This also occurred on St Helena.
No offences are mentioned for him in South Africa or Lucknow India.

If I have the right chap, he went on to marry Harriet, worked in the railway industry as a porter, shunter and brakes man. Following in his father's footsteps also called William. He died in 1928.

Dave - I would say you have the right man:

The above from the Cheltenham Chronicle of 5 January 1929.

I wonder if his misbehaviour limited to St Helena was a sign of frustration and boredom - I suspect he did not enlist to guard prisoners away from all the action and, in the words of Corporal Jones, he wanted to be "up and at 'em".

Although his misbehaviour did reappear when he worked for the GWR as in 1907 he was cautioned for being rude to a lady who was enquiring about a parcel - again possibly due to frustration and boredom as he really wanted to be riding the rails.

In his redemption the nature of the newspaper report of his death suggests he had some standing in the local community.
