Hi Tim - email just sent.

Further to info given in email - the 32nd Battalion IY consisted of the 143rd, 144th, 145th & 146th Companies. The whole battalion travelled out together and I have found the 1903 medal rolls indicating the whole battalion received the Cape Colony & South Africa 1902 Clasps - so they did arrive in South Africa by the end of May 1902. However I cannot find 43103 J Lawless on any of the four medal rolls. Have also looked at the paperwork for one of 146th and his discharge papers clearly show, unlike your GGF's, which company he served in. So I wonder if by being discharged in SA he "fell from view" by 1903 and never received his additional SA 1902 clasp.

Regards, David.

Hi David, I got your email, please see my reply. Yes, I would speculate he couldn't get out of the Yeomanry fast enough, and slide out of the picture. He'd been with the colours, in reserve, called up for the war, and then in the auxiliaries for a total of 14 years. I would say that's enough for any man! :) Thank you for all the research you have done. It's filled in a lot of blank spaces!

Tim.

Tim - an interesting coincidence:

The 1st Battalion Connaught Rangers also sailed to SA on the Bavarian.

If you want to see some photos of her:
