Is it possible that your button may be the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons?
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

Yes, according to the Buttons sub-forum of the British Badge Forum it is indeed the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons.

Was the button picked up on a battlefield?

It seems unlikely to me that the jacket with these buttons was worn in any official capacity during the ABW. They had no connection with the Naval Brigades or army.
It would seem to me more likely to have been a button from a surplus coat.
When I lived in Natal in the 1960s, surplus coats (and especially greatcoats) from all over the world were still routinely sold in small-town trading stores and were very popular with Zulu men. A balaclava and a greatcoat was the civilian 'uniform' for winter days, or night duty all year round, esp. in the Midlands and Berg.
For what it's worth, I too have found a few non-military buttons on AZW and ABW battlefields.
