I’m not quite sure how this works but my message is to the user SMETHWICK. I was fascinated to happen upon the information you have provided with reference to JOHN ARTHUR JONES, who was my grandfather. He died quite some years before I was born but his wife, my grandmother, I remember clearly. I have a photograph of him as a young man of perhaps twenty years, dressed in his army uniform which you might like to add to your fascinating site. Let me know if it is of interest to you.

Is it of interest? - MOST DEFINITELY (and that is an understatement). Warning if the photo at first refuses to be posted it might need electronically resizing (reducing).

Best regards, David (of Smethwick & Pembrokeshire).

Hello David - Patrick here. I’ve sent you a PM with my email address - this photo has been reduced in size but I still can’t send it. I removed the photograph as from the album in order to scan it and there is a description on the rear of the photograph : JOHN ARTHUR JONES C1900 TAKEN AT ALDERSHOT. (UNIFORM) YEOMANRY for S. AFRICAN WAR
The hand is that of my father, JAJ’s second son, Howard Arthur Jerrard Jones.

Patrick - apologies - I had not noticed you had sent me PMs. I will send you an email forthwith.

Message to DJB - this is not the first time I have overlooked a new message and a couple of other Forummers sent me delayed replies because they had overlooked my PM. If the fact one has a new message could be made more more noticeable this octogenarian would be very grateful - perhaps if it flashed.:)

Regards, David.

The photo is of 34362 Trooper John Arthur Jones, 22nd (Cheshire) Company, 2nd Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry.
The photo was sent to me by his grandson Patrick Jones (OlePoplia) and the second photo shows what his father wrote on the back of it.

We know John Arthur was discharged at Aldershot on 3rd September 1902. However, that face and uniform, to me, do not look like they have just spent 16 months fighting in South Africa. So I suspect the 22nd Company called in to Aldershot on their way to embark on the Norham Castle at Southampton on 2 March 1901. On this latter date John Arthur would have been 20 years 1 month old by the time he was discharged he was 21 years and 7 months old.

Patrick many thanks for a wonderful photograph.
