Hello Rob,

Yes, I found it many years ago (When I was based in Cape Town) 13 odd years ago. I cannot recall the Archive Ref now but I am sure it will be somewhere amongst all my research.

Cheers
Part time researcher of the Cape Police and C.P.G Regiment.

Rob,

This is the Ref for his Liquidation and Distribution Accounts that are in the Cape Town Archives. It appears that he died in 1929.

Thanks again Dave and Adrian,

Now that I have confirmed his name I am making some good progress with his research.

Yes thanks Dave, I have the Boer War rolls through “ancestry” plus a full medal roll download from the Archives if I need to look further. I have also found his details of his Lodge membership as well as his family details in England.

In my initial rush to look him up for the 77-8-9 campaigns I did not interrogate the “Ancestry” SAGS rolls as I know that the uneven numbered pages are missing. Fortunately, I have a thick bundle of paper photostat prints of the full SAGS medal roll for colonial recipients but I didn’t look at the miscellaneous names which were not initially listed under the different units! I generally use these documents as they provide much more information than the published rolls. On seeing your roll extract, I of course went back to “Ancestry” and simply searched “W* E* Brooks” and voilà where he was – all three relevant rolls - for the Griquas in 1878, the QSA medal and the additional date clasp.

Adrian, he was also for a period one of your favourites – being a member of the Cape Police.

Story following soon – so thanks very much for all the help chaps.
