Please forgive me for asking and perhaps showing my lack of knowledge I see there is a medal for sale to a Nurse with a CONFIRMED clasp. I was led to believe they were issued without clasps.

Hi Sepsop

Information below taken from the British Army Nurses website.

The QSA was awarded for service in the Boer War. Twenty-six clasps were issued for wearing on the QSA although individuals were rarely awarded more than nine. Nurses were not entitled to clasps as they were classified as ‘non-combatant’. The QSA was awarded to individuals who served from 11th October, 1899 to 31st May, 1902.

What is the description of the medal for sale? It could be possible the clasp may have been added by the recipient at a later date. Does it mention if the clasp is loose or riveted?
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

2 medal rolls to Sister Louisa Dale
1st roll dated 26th August 1901 Newcastle
2nd roll dated 22nd August 1901 Charlestown
The second roll has 9 ticks against Natal and a tick against Defence of Mafeking.
The question is, are those ticks for the Natal clasp to be issued or reference to being in Natal for transfer to Hospital ships?
If clasp was awarded ,then as Bostock has mentioned it is rare and I guess the price tag reflects its scarcity.
I hope the Forum can shine some more light on your request as I am no expert on QSA medals to nurses with or without clasps.

Best regards,
Dave

Morning

Please check the rolls in WO100/229. These ticks do not represent a clasp issue, but rather serve as an administrative check used by the clerks. There are literally dozens of ticks on these pages, most commonly in the 1st column (Belmont) and the last (Natal). In some cases these ticks fall inside the box for the clasps and can be confused with an entitlement. Nurses did not get clasps, and on some rolls there is a "Yes" in the block that is later scored through. I reckon that if you could view the colour version you would probably find these ticks in a different colour, denoting post editing.
That QSA with its Natal clasp is a total fabrication, with someone looking at the roll, assuming the tick is a entitlement and then adding a clasp, certainly not worth the asking price. Thats my opinion.
