Good morning

Is anyone able to let me know if there was specific event(s) that led to Edward Pendarves Dorrien-Smith being awarded a DSO ( L G 27th September 1901 p 6303)? He was ADC to his uncle Horace Lockwood Smith- Dorrien and it may be his staff activities led to the award. He was the youngest recipient of the DSO and a (second) lieutenant. His brother A A Dorrien-Smith received his DSO about the same time.

Thanks in anticipation.

His entry in "The Distinguished Service Order" does not cite a single incident which led to the award of the DSO. However, his services during the campaign were extensive and sufficient to bring him to notice. Quite a number of DSOs were awarded "In recognition of services" during the Boer War.

I am interested in your statement that EP Dorrien-Smith was the youngest recipient of the DSO, how old was he?

Last week I was researching 2nd-Lt FE Hunt, 4th bn King's Own (Royal Lancaster) Rgt was awarded a DSO in 1901 for the defence of Fish River Station. Newspaper's report state he was 21.
