While I have not looked at the papers, they may be Militia and Army papers. It is unusual to find papers for casualties as these were routinely destroyed.

He was recalled in April and posted to O Battery. Do you have the page from his papers showing the date he was sent to South Africa? This would probably explain the Excess Numbers note on the QSA roll.
