Border08,

Welcome to the forum!

There is one J W Walker in the Lincolnshire Regiment. 4787 Private in the 3rd Battalion. He earned the Cape Colony and SA02 clasps.

It would appear from his clasp entitlement that he spent only a few months in South Africa in 1902. I read one account that said the war ended not long after they arrived and that they did not see any action.

The 3rd Volunteer Battalion were headquartered in Grimsby. They were formed from the North Lincolnshire Militia.

If this is him, there are no service papers available in FindMyPast sadly.

Best wishes
David

Border08,

If this is your grandfather and he did serve in the 3rd battalion, you may be interested to search for the publication called 'Annals of the 3rd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, formerly the Royal North Lincoln Militia, 1759-1901. By Captain W V R Fane. Lincoln: James Willimson, printer, 1901, 48 pps.

I do appreciate that this history would seem to omit 1902 when the battalion went to South Africa but it might tell you something of his days in the militia.

Please let me know if you source a copy of this publication.

Best wishes
David

The Foster Library of the Lincolnshire Archives has a copy, Border08.

It looks as though they hold named photos of some of the volunteer battalions too.
