Hello Adrian

My pleasure - if I wasn't waiting on auction results I would have had this myself, well done for snapping it up.

Fincham is actually in the standard printed SAFF casualty roll so will be on Ancestry and Palmer's printed roll. So he is also on my roll at www.boerwarregister.com which is the only corrected and expanded roll.

Regards
Meurig

I really appreciate your help, you have found my man , and I am a happy chappy!

I understand from the wink, that there must be a special casualty roll you recommend. Which is it, and how do I get it for the future ? Is it yours ?

Regards

Adrian

Hello Adrian

Thanks for these, I have been able to update the Gazetteer entry for Smaldeel and correct my assumption that Boers were not involved (taken from the lack of a mention in any history I could readily lay my hands on).

However neither paper matches the casualty numbers in the official roll of 1 killed and 6 injured.

Good Friday in 1901 was April 5th so the incident described in the Lincolnshire Echo must be the one involving Fincham.

There is/was a significant Fincham family in the eastern Cape.

Regards
Meurig

Now that I know Smaldeel was the scene of the accident, here aare 3 extracts from newspapers relating to it.

They are from the Dundee Courier, 11 April 1901, the Aberdeen Journal 13 April 1901, and the Lincolnshire Echo, 20 May 1901.

Regards

Adrian
