JUNE 1901

June 1 Joes at our Rear Guard, big scrap. Very cold weather. A Scrap with signallers today with them as M Orderly chased in by 70 Boers who afterwards hemmed C. Comp in by was relieved after by the Left Harf. Camped
Aberdeen.
June 2 Left Camp at 6 pm coldest day on record, freezing no Joes today camped 5 miles out from Brugs Spruit.
June 3 Halted 5 miles from Brugs Spruit. Tonight on Cossack Post with 12 men and Sergt.Tickerberry 3 miles from camp.
June 4 Convoy for rations sent into Brugs Spruit 120 sick horses went into Middleburg with them drove along the line with 20 men and Corporal L. Camped tonight at Mire.
June 5 Drove horses to Witbank. Halted for 2 hours then on to Olifants River Station arr. 6 pm drove horses into Kraal, slept in stone kraal near at hand, Capt. help to feed horses.
June 6 On to Middleburg arr. at 2 pm horses dying on way and we had to shoot a lot. Arr. with 80 odd horses. Handed over to the Middleburg depot Column moved out for Van Dykes Drift.
June 7 At Middleburg good time
June 8 Still at Middleburg waiting for Major Fraser here to join us.
June 9 Entrained for Brugs Spruit with Major Fraser. I got out at Wilbank to get some G. Syrup and butter at
Canteen. Train went off without me. 5 Miles walk to Bruigs Spruit. Left half 500 odd under Major Morris on Flying column from Van Dykes Drift.
June 10 Fort Stag to Van Dykes Drift 20 miles arr. at 8pm Camp.
June 11 Report that us 20 will join our Harf tonight after Order to stop with Right Harf until tomorrow night then to trek with them. June sent Light Transport to Left Wing 8 miles off with A Comp. G. Comp met A near drift and took over waggons.
June 12 Willmanspruit Camp of Left wing E.F. G H attacked by Boers at 8 pm crept between Outpost and fired volleys into Camp from 20 yds range. 21 killed and 46 wounded G. Comp on Outpost except No. 1 Division. Boers Capture the Camp 150 men. Boers released men after marching them about 2 miles from Camp. Right Harf (Boers Capture 2 Pom Poms) was supposed to move at 1 p.m. and Left at 3am. Scout Black came into Right Harf Camp at 11.30 and reported state of affairs. Right Harf lined up and we were waiting for the Boers to rush us. Mounties ready for them waited until daybreak. Meanwhile men from Left Camp came straggling in that had got away.
June 13 I with Right Harf went to Left H. Camp bad state of affairs all the horses killed on the lines. Reinforcements arr. at 9.30 and we took us a position. Seen Boers very cheeky they riding near the camp 1 000 yds off but we put on a few volleys and they keep out of range of the Oxcon Grey horse very daring. Hundreds of Joes on skyline. Buried dead and brought wounded along with us to Kornfontein Camp also Women from farm house where our wounded were. Bad Camp and bad Picqueting of men on outpost by Officer in Command. Outpost killed Corp Grobbles of the Boers this morning while trying to get some cattle away 1 Boer left dead in our lines. On outpost tonight.
June 14 Wounded sent into Middleburg this morning at 6am while column moved off in a Southerly direction nearly 400 men dismounted. V.M. Rifles now walking sometimes over 25 miles a day. Boers at Rear Guard go in with Right Harf.
June 15 Left Camp at 6 am walking gave my horse to a chap with sore foot L G.D. for the day to ride. Boers at rear Witnessed a Rear Guard action with C. Company Lieut. Selmon wounded on Left Flank with 2 men also wounded Boers nearly capture sheep. Guns late up.
June 16 Camped last night under Telegraph line to Ermelo and Straderton Middleburg etc. Plenty of Boers here Kaffir Spies drove 500 sheep on to outpost the Joes then crawled up behind them but luckily for outpost they discovered the trick and killed one Boer and wounded another I helped to drive sheep away at lam with 50 men from outpost very dark.
June 17 Joes again at Rear Guard this morning they sniped the camp before the last waggons had left and were very cheeky. Still walking trek 20 miles today. Camp near Farm.
June 18 Quiet today seen a few Boers but they showed no fight. June 19 Joined Sir Bendon Bloor 15 miles Trek I up Light Horse under Babington who is in command of the column.
June 19 Halted today. Gave my horse to Lieut Smith of R. Harf for to go after the Boers with our Pom Pom on Outpost tonight with Lieut Coulter. Veldt Fire all around Camp Guide with E. Comp caught here going out to the Boers he is suspected of leading them on us at Willmonsrust and is now under arrest.
June 20 Halted Wood Party fired on here no one hit.
June 21 Halted Seaforth Highlanders join us from G. Babington.
June 22 Halted. We now have a lot of Women and Children and
are taking them to the Middleburg Refugee Camp.
June 23 Trek 12 miles Looting with General Beatson and Staff
and Major Fraser.
June 24 Left Camp at 6 am Rear Guard sniping plenty of fowls
and pigs today.
June 25 Left Camp at 6 am Trek 14 miles to Middleburg. Boers crept up to our rear Guard guns back and Boers retired found barrels of butter and various clothing etc planted in the ground on the Veldt. Arr at Middleburg at 5 pm.

June 27 Halted
June 28 Shifted camp to other side of Railway near the town. General camped in house. Remounts today. I have nice frisky animal think it will last a fair time. Lieut Crisp paid us $1 out of his own pocket very kind of him. Canteen here very cheap. Church Parade on Sunday 30th.
June 29 Exercising horses this morning.

July 1 Still at Middleburg getting refitted here.
July 2 More remounts for V.M.R.
July 3 G. Company to go as escort mounted for the Suffock Regiment to Great Olifants River Station. Arr at Olifants at 5pm. camped near Bridge on Outpost.
July 4 In Camp
July 5 Left Camp at 10am for Middleburg on cemorehada swim in the Great Olifants River good water. Arr Middleburg 5 pm E, Company has gone to Pan Railway Station with a Convoy. Boers reported to be crossing near Pan railway line to Rheanster Rap.
July 6 Halted, had a look around Town of Middleburg. This is here Kruger shifted his seat of Government when he flew from Pretoria, he was not here very long.
July 7 Report of a night march tonight. All men issued with white bands to be on their arms so as to distinguish each other in the dark. All ready at 8pm. 9PM postponed night march. Steel and others arrested for mutiny etc.
July 8 Left camp at 2pm another column on the opposite side of line. Halted at 4pm on old camping ground Middleburg till 6 pm then move off towards Rheanster Kop direction going until 1 1 pm and halted near Drift off again at 3am and captured this day a few hundred rounds of S.A.A. 2 Boers and brought in some families also from various farms. I with P.G. sent back as mounted orderly and 15 pounders. Sent back by Major of Guns for the Duke of Cornwall Light lnf. Signallers gallop 5 miles back on our trek towards waggons. Found signallers on Koppe their first time on horses very funny, them trying to hurry up. 2 Fell off when trotting, Caught horses and had to walk rest of way when they got to the guns. The Major not want them too late for signalling.
July 9 Reville at 3am on Kopje observation with Lieut Crisp and Coulter until 4pm big gallop to relieve to relieve C. Company who were at it with the Joes. Captain Anderson killed carried him 4 miles to Ambulance over terrible country lot of bad falls in gallop returned to Camp at 10pm. Camped Dorn Kop hard days work for horses and men. Jack Hinton commands around here.
July 10 Left Dorn trek to Middleburg .arr at Middleburg 6pm.
July 11 Captain Anderson burried carried on Gun Carriage. Impressive ceremony.
July 12 Left Middleburg trek towards Great Oliforts River Camp at Bridge 4pm. Lieut Hennassy and 20 men to Farm house on outpost mounted. Lieut accidentally wounded shoulder. July 13 Trek 12 miles crossed line towards Rheanster seen few Boers. G. Company advance Guard camp 5.30pm very cold.
July 14 Trek through Gullies to Waterval Boers in sight. Camped under Big Kopje, had swim. Infantry climb hill on outpost. I am on Outpost tonight. Viljoins Commands around here.
July 15 Camp to stay here. Mtd. men to go out. Seen plenty Boers in distance, plenty of fruit and fowls. Grazed horses in Mealie Patch returned to Camp at 5 and found Waggons ready to move off very unexpectedly. Trek to Rokey Kopje through Pass and Camp 9pm.
July 16 Halted here holding Kpoje for Benson who is driving the Boers this way. Plan failed.
July 17 Went about 1 0 miles to Bush Veldt got in touch with C. Benson's Column at 6pm near Waggons Drift and return to Reetfontein.
July 18 Halted and joined by Benson with the Scottish horses and Argyles S. Highlanders. Seen Harry, Hazel also Don and George Adams, all looking well.
July 19 Out after Joes chasing them from Kopje to Kopje captured 3 Boers, 4 waggons, 700 head of cattle ponies in the Bush Veldt.
July 20 Out with Helio party on Kpoje, no scrap, seen Boers in distance through glasses.
July 21 Camped near Rheinster on scene of Bushman fight of Sept 1990.
July 22 Burning houses all day. 4pm camped near Vlakfontein.
July 23 Out on Patrolling Rheinster, Sergeant Buckingham killed. Nice chap.
July 24 Arr. at Bronkerspruit on outpost at Rhenster. Kop outpost fired on us. Segt. K. Pte P.G. I on visiting patrol very dark night. Sergt. Buckingham buried, carried on 15 pounder gun and buried with full military honours.
July 25 Halted Bronkerspruit on 5am Patrol.
July 26 Halted.
July 27 On Patrol with Pom Poms.
July 28 Left Camp at 6am Arr. Viakfontein 1 pm dug up grave of Boers on Outpost.
July 29 Nothing of note, few Boers seen to day.
July 30 Camp at 2pm out on patrol
July 31 Went out to Halo road on Bush Veldt, 12 miles off camp G. Company all of us on Outpost. Horses Circled in Bush, got nothing. H. Comp. relieved us at 6am, caught 1 Boer and wounded a couple of others. G. Comp with Capt. Caltman, Lieut. Hennessy and Coulter. (Right Harf captured 3 Boers)

AUGUST 1901

August 1 Rum this morning for us returning to Camp at 9am from Bush Veldt, 2 E. Coy wounded.
August 2 Camped at Ruffontein, Pte. Fisher, Swan, Stevenson and myself on observation this morning at 4am reached post 5am, 4 miles from Camp, had a go in with Boers, 30 of them at us, I horseholder, very warm corner for over half hour hold post Boers galloping at us. Blannon and Group to rescue, up Kopje also Companys from Camp. 1 Boers horse hit. Praise from Leiut. Coulter.
August 3 Camped Lieufontein last night arr. 6pm and entrenched there.
August 3 Convoy in for rations, nice weather lately.
August 4 On observation with Corp. Blannia. Pte. G. J.N. on Rocky Kopje near Rheanster. G.. Coy observations all around Camp. Intelligence Officer shot by mistake for Boer by observation on our left, sad affair.
August 5 Halted here entrenched all around Camp. Intelligence Officer burried today.
August 6 Shift Camp to Vlakfontein at 2pm and Camp.
August 7 Left Camp 6am trek to Bronkerspruit arr at 12am noon.
August 8 Halted Drawing Rations.
August 9 Trek to Brugs Spruit passed over Eloff Bridge and Camp. Mail from Aust.
August 10 Arr at Witbank at 6pm and entrained for Pretoria at Midnight. Left Pretoria at 4.15am P.S. left behind asleep on the 11th Aug.
August 11 Arr Elandsfontein 6am had breakfast. Arr. Standerton 6pm.
August 12 Arr. Newcastle 6am. Rained during night.
August 13 Went into Camp at Newcastle. Natal passed, Majuba Hill and Laings Nek Tunnel this morning in train.
August 14 To be under Col Paitiney, Scots Guard joined by 14th Hussars, issue of kit this morning which is badly wanted and left camp at 3.30pm treked to Fort Umbalea arr. At 9pm and camped near the Fort over the Baffle River. August 15 Left Camp at 6am. Trek to Ulretch arr. at 2.30. Nice little Town again in the Transvaal.
August 16 Halted at Utretch at 1 pm, big climb up to Knights Farm reached at 6pm and left again at 8pm on night march for Elands Nek. Travelling all night until 4am halted till fog lifted. Rear Guard action. Camp 3pm. August 17 Rear Guard.
August 18 Camp One Tree Hill after being in saddle 26 hours all very tired.
August 19 Halted One Tree Hill on supports on sentry go near the Tree Officers. Snapshots taken by Dr. Hoods.
August 20 Hold position out to day, wrote a letter while horseholder, when we were returning after shelling the scrubs, Boers came at us rear Guard, G. H. and Lieut. Selman and 1 one man wounded. Great bravery on part of 14th Hussars, left us on our own to do what we could until the Pom Poms arrived. Good shelling, 1 Boer knocked off his horse by Pom Pom. Boers very cheeky, held position until H. Company retired, ammunition exhausted, Arr. Camp at 5pm. Boers retired after cut in Ambul. Corp, cowardice etc., warm corner.
August 21 Trek to Spitz Kop, arr. at 10am on gun Guard stood to arm 5am on stable picket.
August 22 Camp on flat below Spitz Kop near Scouverberg Mountains on advance guard. H.B. Kaffir hands up etc. Veldt fires steep hill climb, seen far Boers getting away with wagons while on observation post 4pm. Camp at 6pm on outpost.
August 23 Right Harf went out at 3am to scale the Scouverberg Mt. and hold position for Convoy, they had cut in at 5am. 1 man killed in C. Corp. and 1 man in D. Corp killed also one of the D. Fusillers died of wounds after and Major Daley wounded 3 others. Dow Lawrence killed. Party sent out to recover Dow at night buried him stripped. D. Comp....... go in with Joes Capt. Bell.
August 24 Seen J.M. rifles in distance. Stewarts column sniping at rear guards today at 1 pm. Arr. Vryheid joined J.M. Rifles. Heavy rain.
August 25 On outpost last night, bad night, heavy rain. T. Bridgeload sent to Vryheid sick horse depot. Nice Town.
August 26 Drawing rations for Zululand Trek.
August 27 Start out for Zululand with about 300 Zulu's carrying all sorts of implements of War. Left Camp 6am, rode through town passed the Railway Station being built to connect Dundee with Vryheid. Halted near Reet Vlei at 12am and had to mount again soon after. Right Harf Flankers fired on 1 man wounded on the side of the farm. Right Wing E.F. with guns G H to charge take Reit Vlei. Mountain climbed up covered by Pom Pom 15 pounders at 3/4 way up we had to take cover from a heavy fire from the Boers on top 5 hours on Hill fired nearly all our ammunition. 14th Hussars supposed to support us but instead stopped....... at Piet Henderson Farm. Colonel sent word to retire as quickly as possible. On retiring Lieut. Coulter killed, Laurie Sig Wallace wounded, Nev Johnson of G. Company Pte Ellis wounded near...... of H. Comp. I had my finger slightly grazed hard fight engaging over 150 Boers. G 50 men H 47 to take position. G Complimented H by Pulteney Stewart.
August 28 Trek to Goodtroek near Botha's farm. Arr. at 4pm helped to dig grave for Lieut. Coulter. I planted a scrub on his grave. H.T.A.B Capt. on Outpost tonight. Fires Veldt moonlight.
August 29 Convoy halted, Mounted troops went out on reconniscence. Burnt houses brought in Families etc. Hot day.
August 30 Returning to Vryheid we had the R. Lancasters with us on this trek as Infantry. Blew up Bothas farm had a big go in with Joes on Left Flank. Pom Pom 15 pounders shelling in galore, also at it with Rifles 3 J.M.R. 1 Vol C.R. died of wounds 2 days after. Camped at Reet Vlei tonight Boers had a good few casualities today. Joes fire on our camp at 12 midnight, stand to arms quick reply by our Outposts, we supported them with fixed bayonets but Joe was content to stand off and snipe. ........ fire on them my horse hit in the leg by bullet from Joes, also one in H. Company led horse into Vryheid with Convoy left him there in Sick horse lines afterwards shot and a good horse he was had him for nearly 3 months.

SEPTEMBER 1901

Sept 1 Seen F.B. looks well. In drawing Rations of Vryheid for another trek tp Zululand.
Sept 2 Left Camp 7am treking South E. very bad road for miles Piet Henderson under White Flag for a waggon he recons we took that was an ambulance, speaks of our fight at Riet Vlei said he with 20 men was lying in grass 50 yards from us. One J.M.R. killed today. Victorian lst Corp. Posting Proclamation of 15th Sept. on left side of Road watching Joes cattle. Camped at Dorn Kop 7pm F. Comp. on Koppe.
Sept 3 Short trek cut in with Joes at Mill, Dublin Fusilier Officer killed 1 wounded. Layarefte on road Pom Poming Mill. Camped at 6pm. J.M.R's on our right.
Sept 4 Second attempt to get to Mill. J.M.R's on right shelling and us also. 15 Pounder Pom Poming and Maxims and rifles, this day very lively plenty Joes very cheeky galloping between ridges, shelling the men galore with new guns, unsuccessful attempt at Mill, retired at 6pm. Joes in force here. Botha in command on harf rations on Outpost.
Sept 5 Long trek to Non Meenie, arr 6p.m. J.M.R.'s advance sniping on our Left Flank. Outpost fired on one of our men passed....... on way very windy lot of Bobs drifts etc crossed Non Weinie wrecked train. Mail from Aust Convoy here for us.
Sept 6 Arr N. Utre camped on Hill near Fort. Canteen here bread.
Sept 7 Crossed Vants Drift Bufflo River Border of Natal. Had swim in River camped at 5pm.
Sept 8 Arr Dundee Natal passed Mt. Talana where the Battles of Dundee of 99 was fought and Mt. lmpactu Klip Drift rode through town very pretty place. Little girl singing $ of the K. halted for 2 hours. Details join us here with fresh horses also trek to Glencoe Junct. at 4pm entrained for Volksrust at night off by 1 1 pm travelling all night. Arr Volksrust at 9.30am passed Majuba heavy rain 8th Hussars join us here. Camp near train.
Sept 10 Paid 5 Pounds today cheap Canteen here.
Sept 11 Volksrust visited Canteen.
Sept 12 Exercising horses.
Sept 13 Halted at Volksrust on........ Guard Rietmon Tryed C.M. by Major Vallentin Art V.M.R. officers, I sentry on trial Non Wienie affair Outpost - not guilty.
Sept 14 Left Camp at 6am trek to Wakkerstroone. Pretty little town etc. Big Churchs. Camped.
Sept 15 On sick parade for swelled gland, sent into Wakkerstroone Hospital for spell from riding. Column moved out at 2pm raining hard.
Sept 16 Column $ doings until I rejoin heavy rain no blankets pulling waggons stuck in mud up Hill
Sept 17 No rations no blankets bad time plenty of rain.
Sept 18 Waggons down Hill to Utretch shift again at 1 pm. Hear of Goughs cut up here Seales drift.
Sept 19 Rain no Blankets
Sept 20 Shifted camp at to Mears drift of Miles. Tarpaulins for cover at nights.
Sept 21 Heavy rain no Blankets Horses croak harf rations.
Sept 22 Camp flooded Rum tonight.
Sept 23 Arr Dundee 5pm 17 miles trek. No blankets yet.
Sept 24 Halted today and got blankets sent down by train from Newcastle. 1 st time for 6 nights with Blankets.
Sept 25 Leave for De Joaques Drift and burn surplus kit etc. pass along Vryheid Railway. Bruce Hamilton Col Clements camped here. Boers reported in forse here Under Lieut. Botha.
Sept 26 Segts got Beer across drift swin in the Bufflo for it, Rain.
Sept 27 Left for Vants Drift Long trek Camped Scottish rifles joining here
Sept 28 Cross Drift Drier 3 days Rations in Haversacks on flying column H. Comp to bring on convoy in morning 3 days horse feed to be carried also on horses came up with Col. Allenby's Column at 12 noon at Sandy drift. Halt 1/2 hr in afternoon passed lsandiewood where Zulu's smashed up the British at Dawn in 1879. Big monument and several graves went 27 miles camped Gourkes Drift 6.30.
Sept 29 Did about 18 miles camped 4pm Heavy Rain.
Sept 30 Halted Convoy here for us.

Oct 1 Moved back towards Vants Drift.
Oct 2 Arr. N. Utre at 1 pm Ned Giles shot. Foggy weather.

Oct 11 Arr Vryheid after dinner moved towards Dundee rained hard.
Oct 12 Reached Dundee Blood River turned off to Utretch at Blockhouse
Oct 13 Arr. Utretch expected to go to Newcastle but no Niggers strike work here time expired fresh niggers obtained here.
Oct 14 Up the Hill again to Knights Farm drew 8 days rations.
Oct 15 Treked out to place where Lieut Salmon was wounded plenty of Boers about here.......... River farmer Houghton killed today near Elandsberg Nek by old Joe in scrub 76 years of age shot him from 20 yds away. Shelling cattle in the Pongoln Bush. Convoy fired on and also guns, one Artillery driver wounded. Camp 1am.
Oct 17,16 Shelling scrub rain right harf trek convoy back to Hamilton 1 horse killed shot
Oct 18 Shifted Camp about 4 miles along face of Pongolabush foggy. 1/2 rations now.
Oct 19 Shifted to opposite side of Pongren Raining on 1/2 rations. Lunsburg Church passed. Camp 6pm no Blankets stuck at drift.
Oct 20 Botha supposed to be here in Pongoin. Six columns around back Campbell's column got 2 15 pounders hidden in Spruit. On Patrol Chris Botha's Farm. Burnt.............. shelling Pongola, searched Gully.
Oct 21 On Patrol got some Cattle shifted on to Tableland 2 or 3 miles from Tuneberry.
Oct 22 Rain Halted shifted back opposite side Pongola again. 1 Biscuit per day rations not supply. Convoy rejoined Column. Horses remounts Capt lost pony Ailea Kop.
Oct 23 Halted horse trod on my foot, toe very sore and swelled.
Oct 24 Shifted to Elands Nek
Oct 25 Full rations again, met Stewart Column joined Garrett Column, shelled Scrub.
Oct 26 G. Comp with guns, 4 Joes wounded, 2 killed. G searched scrub, plenty of women children hidden in leaves, brought same into Camp, Sheep Cattle.
Oct 27 Last night Boer sniped on Camp. Kaffirs at Kraal seen him smashed his head for him with waddies 12 midnight Patrol.
Oct 28 Night march 1 1 pm Right Harf got 28 Joes. Left H. 14 Boers, 2 in bed with woman very funny sudden surprise at 4am. Rear Guard snipes at coming back to Camp. Heavy Rain.
Oct 29 Total captures for last night's work with Garrefts captures also total 40 Boers cattle sheep Waggons people carts with 62. I.B 7th N.Z.
Oct 30 Rations again. Halt rain misty. Boers snare about dozen horses mules away near camp. Camped on side of Elands Nek. Benson's Column go in today Blankeniungte.
Oct 31 Capture for trek 30 odd Boers Waggons Cattle Sheep in abandonce trek to One Tree Hill arr 1 pm down Hill on flanking etc. for Joes on Right Flank.

NOVEMBER 1901

Nov 1 Halted for Rations
Nov 2 Shifted towards Scoveimberg Hoek. Swon shot holes on Outpost.
Nov 3 Trek to 18 miles from Vryheid for Boers about today hot.
Nov 4 Column halted today 13 miles from Vryheid near Garreft's column.
Nov 5 Cup Day. Night march 10 pm travelled till 3am. Struck 70 to 100 Boers about 3am in farm. Capt Chrisp 2 men killed rush farm 3 wounded. Killed 2 Joes wounded 2 others. Captured 14 Boers. Lot of Boers at Rear of Farm scatter on Kopje. Burnt saddles rifles of Joes left behind by them in farm, capture ponies cattle.
Nov 6 150 Men Left Harf under Major Fraser got into the scrap yesterday. Escort convoy to Scheeper Farm today 6pm camp.
Nov 7 Column halted at Vryheid. Buried Capt. Chrisp.
Nov 8 Halted Vryheid. Rations to draw here.
Nov 9 Halted Rain.
Nov 10 Halted at Vryheid on Outpost. Sports etc. Horse Racing.
Nov 11, 12, 13, 14 Bad weather 2 heavy storms here trees blown down, 1 1 men struck by Lightening at Fort above town of Vryheid some killed rest injured.
Nov 15 Treked about 1 0 miles along back of Reet Vlei road bad waggons very late into Camp.
Nov 16 4am Revallie on Advance Guard. Camp 6pm Rain.
Nov 17 Revallie at 3.45. Raining heavy.
Nov 18 Crossed Stone Bridge. Camped near Paul Pietersdorp at 4pm.
Nov 19 Trek at 4.30am to Blockhouses on Wakkerstroon to Piet Retief line of Blockhouses. Rain little.
Nov 20 Halt on Mule Guard.
Nov 21 Left Camp 9pm searched farms saw nothing, night march.
Nov 22 Moved toward Wakkerstroom Observation post night march at 7 o'clock till 4pm next day camped 7pm.
Nov 23 Right Harf cut in with Botha. Lieut Mergher V. Cross in bravery displayed carrying man out of fire, riding back giving him his horse etc. Hot corner.
Nov 24 Camped near Donkerhoek, 2 men V.M.R. wounded, Rankin died of wounds after, near Casselis Nek.
Nov 25 Joined General Plumer's Column near Movepoort. Trek towards Rotterdam Spits Kop etc 2.30 pm night march Left Flanks with Plumer Camp 7pm. Searching scrup Kaffir found 2 Boers hidden in garden. Treked back towards Wakkerstroon, 2 men wounded. Halted with Plumer. Halted rain. Halted, Camp at Donkershoek. 12 miles Trek.
