Thank you David,

I thought that it would be of interest. I wonder who F.Toy was??

In case any foreigners (i.e. non-South Africans) have not picked it up, the inscription:
DOOR DEN VIJAND VEROORDEELD EN GESCHOTEN
translates as:
CONDEMNED AND SHOT BY THE ENEMY
Followed by the names: H J Veenstra, Jan van Vuuren, F Toy, Nicolaas van Wyk and Willie Louw.

There is a 1901 document in the Cape Archives with the description:
ANGLO-BOER WAR AND HIGH TREASON: COLESBERG: RE: EXECUTION OF REBELS:
1. HENDRIK PETRUS VAN VUUREN OF WILLOWMORE.
2. HENDRIK JAN VEENSTRA OF MURRAYSBERG
3. HENDRIK TOY

Another 1901 Cape Archives document is:
VEENSTRA, HJ AND TOY, F, TO BE TRIED BY COURT MARTIAL FOR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY.

And a third one:
TOY, FREDERICK. DEATH NOTICE.

It seems both Frederick Toy and Hendrik Toy met their deaths at the hands of the British in 1901.

It is fortunate indeed that this family tragedy has been exposed by the forum's Cape Archives Consultant, Adrian ('capepolice'), so we can look forward to a full expose in the not too distant future.

I forgot to add, there are no Toys listed on the ABO medal roll, perhaps not surprisingly since it is possible that the South African Toy lineage became extinct in Colesberg in 1901 and there was no-one to claim Frederick's and Hendrik's medals.

Brett,

This is a disaster   If only I had posted these pictures while I was in Cape Town. As you know I spent a few days in the Archives doing my normal CP thing and could have quite easily pulled these references!!!

Drat, nou is ek mal !!

Oh well, another project to attend to rather sooner than later.

Cheers
Adrian
