Thanks David,
That fills a gap in my knowledge.
Still, a pity there wasn't anything commissioned with the men's names on for 2nd and 6th battalions at the same time.
Cheers Steve

I would also like to say thank you for putting all of the Worcesters in a single list. I have checked my collection and no names pop up.....

Hi,
I have recently come across this postcard image of the Worcester South African Monument which I believe is tributed to the opening ceremony.

This photo relates to the first few postings and images by 'coldstream' and 'Berenice' nearly nine years ago.

Thanks for posting the image of the postcard regarding the unveiling ceremony at Worcester Cathedral. It prompts me to take a look at the local press coverage of the time.

This morning I found the following poem online which is dedicated to the Worcester S.A. memorial. Composed by Pete Ray in 2019, it shows that folk are still impressed by the monument and sacrifice that took place over 120 years ago ( poem reproduced here for research purposes only).

"Crouching, portrayed as gallant in war,
Puttees wrapped tight above polished
boots'
He fires a round at the insistent Boer,
Stubbornly resistant as he shoots...

No helmet, his jerkin open at the neck
Suggests a last defensive stand,
Yet the rifleman's grim, glaring
expression
And his hard-set jaw render an
impression
Of contempt for the enemy
in conditions alien and raw...

The memorial symbolises the
wastefulness
And the horror of the South African
War:
Death in action, death from wounds or
death from sickness
On the veldt of the insurgent guerrilla
Boer..."
