Stonyhurst College adjoins the village, which may explain the presence in a small village of such a richly-carved, generic memorial.

Frederick Sleigh, First Earl Roberts, K. C. V.C.
and his companions in arms,
the Soldiers and Sailors of the Empire,
who fought in South Africa, 1899-1902.



The Great War memorial is across the road.

Thank you for posting this imposing memorial, Berenice. There cannot be many places in Britain that do not have a monument and/or headstone commemorating the Boer War!!!!
