PS I thought that Elmarie had contributed the last word, but this has been an extraordinary thread that has revealed how much is on record about this war and its participants. When I posted an aside from an obscure book I had no idea just how much would come from it.

I am most grateful to Elmarie, Berenice and Justin for turning a piece of trivia into a valuable record of what was clearly a tragic and remarkable military family.
