ABERDEEN V.C.'S SUDDEN DEATH.

CPL. A. H. L. RICHARDSON, GORDON HIGHLANDERS.

....A well-known Gordon Highlander V.C., Corporal Arthur Herbert Lindsay Richardson, died with tragic suddenness in Aberdeen on Saturday forenoon. He came down town to call upon a friend in the Tank (War Savings) Hut in Castle Street, and while there became suddenly ill and collapsed. He was taken by taxi to a house in Gray Street, but expired almost immediately. A doctor pronounced death to be due to heart failure.
....Corporal Richardson, who was 48 years of age, had a most remarkable career. He won the Victoria Cross in the South African war. He was still in that country when hostilities broke out in 1914, and he saw service in German South-West Africa, with the rank of corporal. On the conclusion of General Botha's campaign, Richardson returned to this country, and enlisted in the autumn of 1915, as a private in the Gordon Highlanders.

Offered a Commission.
....His previous distinguished career as a brave and efficient soldier was ascertained by the authorities - although not from Richardson himself, such was his modesty of nature. He was immediately promoted to his former rank of corporal. The offer of commissioned rank was made to him, but declined. Displaying great eagerness to proceed to the front, at a time when hevy fighting was in progress, he left Aberdeen in November, 1915, with a draft of the 3rd Battalion Gordon Highlanders, and fought alongside another V.C. of the regiment, Drum-Major Kenny. Corporal Richardson was severely wounded in a leg and was invalided home. For a time he acted as a commissionaire in one of the local picture houses. He had not been in robust health of late, but to his many army and civilian friends the news of his sudden death came as a shock.

The Aberdeen Corporal Richardson's full name at death was registered as Arthur Herbert Lindsay Richardson. I could find no Richardsons being born in Methil, 20+ miles north of Aberdeen, in the mid 1870s, nor a Henry Matthew Charles Richardson anywhere in England, Wales, or Scotland. Could he have been born in South Africa?

There's no Richardson on the nominal roll of the Durban Light Infantry.

Arthur H. L. Richardson, of Peterborough, died early 1900s, as claimed by "Major Butler." - from 1902 to 1911, only two adult Richardsons of a suitable age died in Peterborough: - Charles and John William, both in 1906.
No A. H. L. Richardson died anywhere in England and Wales from 1902 to 1906.

Euclid Hall is a single building, at 515 Jarvis Street, Toronto. It was claimed that Richardson died there in 1923, when he was "in want and badly off." So was it along the lines of a YMCA? Seems unlikely.
"The building was then bequeathed to the University of Toronto's Victoria College in 1915. The manor served as the first home of Toronto radio station CFRB in the 1920s." www.facebook.com/historyhaunted/photos/h...own/923421634350584/
