IL,

Unfortunately, British commanders through the ages seem to have followed the maxim of Nelson's that Jack Aubrey was so impressed by, 'Never mind manoeuvres, always go at them' !

Something else to remember on the battlefield (and elsewhere):

When in danger, or in doubt,
Run in circles, scream and shout!

And not just on active service either! Certain managers in my former employer had certainly heard of your "maxim" (pun) and opposing lawyers sometimes wheeled it out.
Best regards

When I was still gainfully employed, I often thought of "screaming and shouting", usually at meetings, which included meetings about meetings past and those still to come, and which had little to do with productive employment. My need for a salary kept me in order.
