I have seen a similar item in the Tasmanian Museum some years ago (without the Boer use inscription) and such items were used by British troops during the lateish Victorian era. The 1929 edition of the Textbook of Small Arms describes grenades as being little used in the 1870's but records that "They were, however, used by our troops in the Sudan 1884-5; these grenades consisted of cast iron spheres of about the size of a tennis ball, were filled with powder and provided with the usual simple fuze." I did not see any dimensions quoted for the item posted and it may either be an example of use of captured items or a bit of local improvisation. Nevertheless a most interesting item.
