Two composite tobacco jars made by Baehr and Maresch Siderolith und Terracotta Fabrik, corner of Teplitzerstraße & Johannesstraße, Aussig an der Elbe, Bohemia (now Revoluční Ulici, Ústí nad Labem, Czech Republic).

Composites are figurals consisting of separate and unrelated components such as a head or bust on top of a barrel or sack. Johann Maresch was the predominant producer of this style. His factory also made garden gnomes, for which Aussig an der Elbe became well known.

General De la Rey and President Kruger.

Impressed factory marks on base of Kruger jar: "JM" (for Johann Maresch); model number "3430"; conjoined double "oo" (possibly for 1900).

Condition not great, but commemorative pieces celebrating Dr Jameson's ill-fated Raid are hard to come by.

This group by George Tinworth is without a doubt the most sort after piece of ABW ceramics there is. Collectors of Tinworth have very deep pockets, this example (with damage) selling for a staggering $9,480 USD in 2009. Last year (2024) Bonhams sold a glazed stoneware model of a mouse on a penny farthing for £10,240 GBP.

Auctioneer’s description.

Doulton Lambeth Salt-glaze Figural Group of A Gathering of Boer War Soldiers, c. 1900, modelled by George Tinworth, entitled "Home From The Front", depicting three seated men about a tripod tea table flanked by columns surmounted by a dog and cat, ht. 5 3/4 in.

The latest acquisition for the china cabinet. This impessive parian figure of "LORD ROBERTS of CANDAHAR", based on the well-known photograph by Lafayette, Dublin, is inscribed on the reverse "Made in Germany" but otherwise unmarked. This is the two-colour version of the piece sold through Ewbanks Auctions in 2017. See p.8 of this thread.

I have seen four of these over the years, all of which have had the sword either restored or missing.

The vendor thought the maker might be Schafer & Vater, but I am not convinced.

As mentioned HERE, Robinson and Leadbeater glazed a number of their popular parian busts, to give them an antiqued appearance. These are much scarcer than the white examples, for which the company was renowned. I now have four of the seven ABW busts in this finish, the one of Baden-Powell being the most recent acquisition. I am still looking for Macdonald, French and Kitchener.

Interestingly, the glazed version of BP is noticeably smaller than the "naked" bust (213 mm opposed to 221 mm high). In the past dealers have told me that this difference in size can indicate that a piece is a re-cast (due to shrinkage of the mould taken from the original). It is certainly the case that Robinson & Leadbeater's Boer War busts were copied, a situation that led to the company taking A. Nieri Fabbri & Co. to court in July 1900.

London Evening Standard, 18th August 1900

TO MANUFACTURERS, DEALERS IN CHINA, PARIAN and PLASTER of PARIS MODELS.

LAWTON, LEADBEATER, and ROBINSON (trading as Robinson and Leadbeater), of Stoke-upon-Trent, v. FABBRI (trading as A. Nieri Fabbri and Company), of 2, Leicester Place, Little Saffron Hill, Clerkenwell Road, London E.C.

Take Notice that, by an ORDER of his Lordship, Mr Justice Kekewich in this action, dated the 20th July 1900, the Defendant, FRANCESCO FABBRI, was RESTRAINED until judgement in the above action, or further order, from making, importing, causing to be made or imported, or exposing for sale or otherwise disposing of any pirated copy or cast of the Plaintiff’s copyright SCUPLTURES, MODELS, or BUSTS of Field Marshal Lord Roberts, Generals Buller, Hector Macdonald, Sir George White, French, and Major General Baden-Powell, or any of them, and Notice is hereby Given, that proceedings will be taken in the High Court of Justice against any person or persons making, importing, causing to be made, or exposing for sale, or otherwise disposing of any pirated copy or cast of the Plaintiffs’ copyright sculptures, models or busts.

MARSHALL and ASHWELL, Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, Solicitors for the Plaintiffs.

The two types side by side, clearly showing the difference in size.
