In a letter home from Sapper J. Swinwood, of the Crewe Royal Engineers (Railway Volunteers), after mentioning the Modder River battle, he gave the names of some of the men he was sharing a railway carriage compartment with - Champion, Goskin, Wolfe, and Williams - and also the wounding of a T. Wilkinson, of the Deviation Works, Crewe.

Was there a Goskin in the Royal Engineers, or perhaps Gaskin?

From a letter by another Volunteer, it was mentioned that the wounded Wilkinson was a corporal (so possibly a lance-corporal).

Thank you, Dave, for identifying Godkin/Goskin.

I found a Corporal Wilkinson who served with the same railway unit. But no mention of him being wounded.

Seemingly only a "slight" wound. Corporal James Brookes wrote "Our troops lost heavily, but only one Engineer was wounded—Corporal Wilkinson. He dropped just by me, but I hear he is only slightly wounded."
